The
Millennium
I've always thought
"Futurist" would be a cool job title, but how do you
get a gig like that? While I'm waiting for the phone to ring I
might as well give it a whirl on an amateur basis...
Prediction: as we approach
December 31st this year "millennial angst" will be a
non-event for the population at large. There'll be plenty of good
parties around the place, but there will be surprisingly little
interest in the beginning of the new millennium itself. Many
people will reject the hype as meaningless numerology, and will
seek to actively treat the whole event as (at the most) an
ordinary New Years Eve. This may even come to be the accepted cool
stance. At extreme, many people will compete to be doing the most
banal thing possible at midnight on December 31st.
As well as reflecting
general secular rationalism, this rejection will be driven by the
inevitably gross over-commercialisation and crushingly ungroovy
"establishment" hype that we'll inevitably soon be
drowning in.
